  8. Welcome to the QualiType "SE" versions of FontHandler and
  9. Font Sentry! This package contains software for Microsoft
  10. Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.1 ONLY. If you are
  11. running Windows 95 please download our Win95-specific SE
  12. version package (filename QTSE95.EXE) from our forum library
  13. on CompuServe at GO QTYPE. If you do not have access to
  14. CompuServe, look for the QTSE95.EXE file wherever you found
  15. this QTSE31.EXE version file, or send an email message to
  16. 74777.3535@compuserve.com for a list of other sites where
  17. you can download our files.

  20. and use this software as well as late-breaking news that did

  51. A. Getting Started
  52. ===============================================================
  53.  
  54. To get started with this software, we recommend following
  55. the steps below.
  56.  
  57. 1. If you have not already, uncompress and copy the software
  58.    to your computer's hard disk by running the QTSE31.EXE
  59.    program file. This is a self-extracting Windows archive
  60.    that contains all necessary files for this program. No
  61.    "installer" program or procedure is necessary other than
  62.    unpacking the archive to your hard disk. However, if you
  63.    want to you may optionally run the INSTALL.EXE program to
  64.    create a Program Manager group and icons for the software.
  65. 2. Be sure to review the entire contents of this README file.
  66. 3. For an interactive tour of this software, use the QualiType
  67.    online Help "Visual Help" sub-system. This is a "point and
  68.    click" guide to the main features and functions of our
  69.    programs. By browsing the Visual Help screens, you can
  70.    learn about the programs without actually running them.
  71.    (Any Windows *.HLP file may be opened directly by running
  72.    the WINHELP.EXE program in your \WINDOWS directory).
  73. 4. For specific information about using FontHandler, see the
  74.    main Help topics "What Is QualiType FontHandler" and "Font
  75.    Management Essentials". For information on the Font Sentry
  76.    system see "Font Sentry Overview" and "Quick Introduction
  77.    Experiment" in the Font Sentry Help file.
  78. 5. Finally, if you have not already set up a font-storage
  79.    system on your computer, you may want to do so before
  80.    beginning to work with FontHandler. See the FontHandler
  81.    Help topic on "Setting Up Your Font System" for details.
  82.    IMPORTANT: In reviewing the "Setting Up" information,
  83.    please bear in mind the limitations on font-directory
  84.    selection in FontHandler SE outlined below. The online
  85.    Help information was written to reflect the full-version
  86.    FontHandler product.

  89. B. FontHandler SE Additional News and Information
  90. ===============================================================
  91.  
  92. 1. SE Version Limitations
  93. =========================
  94. FontHandler SE is restricted in certain features as compared
  95. to our full-version FontHandler 2.0 product. The program's
  96. operation for installing and uninstalling TrueType and ATM
  97. fonts is fully enabled, and you can preview and print samples
  98. of fonts as well. The SE limitations are primarily in the
  99. number of font groups that you can create and in the font
  100. directories that the program can access. Other limitations
  101. in various font-management-related features like renaming
  102. fonts and searching for fonts are not available as well.
  103.  
  104. However, the program's basic operation and interface design
  105. remains unaffected by these limitations, and you should be
  106. able to fairly assess its usefulness and operation by running
  107. this SE version. Anyone who is SERIOUS about fonts, however,
  108. will definitely want to upgrade to our full-version program!

  112. 2. Changing the HOME directory
  113. ==============================
  114. By default, the FontHandler HOME directory is the location
  115. where the program is installed. This directory is where the
  116. FontHandler Setup Module will look for font files at startup,
  117. but you will normally not have any font files stored here.
  118. Thus at first, the program may not show any fonts in the
  119. "UnInstalled" listbox. This is normal.
  120.  
  121. In the full-version FontHandler program, you can change
  122. the default HOME directory in the Setup Options dialog box.
  123. However, in this SE version the "Change Directory" function
  124. is limited to ONLY the default Windows TrueType and Adobe
  125. Type Manager font directory locations.
  126.  
  127. If you want to use some other directory besides (a) the
  128. program's installation directory or (b) one of the two default
  129. font-system locations, you may do so by manually editing the
  130. Setup Module's "Home directory=" command line in a plain-text
  131. editor such as the Windows NOTEPAD. You will find this command
  132. line in the FHSTSE20.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory.
  133. Note: see the additional information about this INI file below.
  134.  
  135. 3. Reinstalling or Moving Program Files
  136. =======================================
  137. Please note that only ONE INSTANCE of the FontHandler SE
  138. software is allowed to exist on your computer! Additional
  139. copies that you may install to other drives or directories
  140. will use configuration and data files from the first
  141. installed instance.
  142.  
  143. However, if you need to move or reinstall the software to a
  144. new location on your hard disk, you may do so without trouble
  145. by first deleting the extra copy of the FHSTSE20.INI and/or
  146. the QTCMSE10.INI files located in your Windows directory. When
  147. the reinstalled or moved program is run the next time, it will
  148. automatically recreate these files for you.
  149.  
  150. 4. Installing Over FontHandler Version 1.0
  151. ==========================================
  152. FontHandler SE installs into a new directory structure
  153. compared to the default location for FontHandler 1.0. If you
  154. are a FontHandler version 1.0 user, you can continue to use
  155. the 1.0 version for productive work while you explore and
  156. learn about our 2.0 release with this SE version. Please note
  157. that we recommend only running ONE of each release at a time.
  158. For best results you should exit any running instance of one
  159. release before launching a copy of the other release.
  160.  
  161. 5. Notes for Upgraders
  162. ======================
  163. If you are upgrading to FontHandler 2.0 from either our 1.0
  164. version or from any version of Ares(tm) FontMinder(tm), you
  165. may be interested in reading the FHFMNOTE.WRI file enclosed
  166. with this FontHandler SE file set. This is a Windows Write
  167. format document with a copy of the "Notes for Upgraders"
  168. section of the printed FontHandler User's Guide book.
  169.  
  170. 6. Additional Files of Interest
  171. ===============================
  172. * CTL3DV2.QT
  173.       This is the Microsoft "3D Controls" library file
  174.       for enabling the three-dimensional look in all
  175.       Windows programs. Rename this file to CTL3DV2.DLL
  176.       and move it to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory if
  177.       you do not already have it on your system and
  178.       want to see the 3D effects in FontHandler.
  179. * FONTHAND.DOT
  180.       This is a Microsoft Word for Windows template file
  181.       which may be used to integrate FontHandler SE with
  182.       Word, so that a button and menu command to launch
  183.       FontHandler SE appears on the Word toolbar and
  184.       under the "Tools" menu.
  185.  
  186.       To use this file, simply copy it to your Word
  187.       for Windows \STARTUP directory. The next time
  188.       you start Word, the button and menu item for
  189.       FontHandler will appear. To remove this feature,
  190.       simply move or delete the FONTHAND.DOT file from
  191.       the \STARTUP directory again.
  192.  
  193.       Note that if you install FontHandler SE to a disk
  194.       drive or directory other than the default, you
  195.       must edit the macro contained in this template
  196.       file to point to the correct program location.
  197.       See your Word for Windows documentation for more
  198.       information on *.DOT files, editing macros, and
  199.       template files in the \STARTUP directory.

  202. C. Font Sentry SE Additional News and Information
  203. ===============================================================
  204.  
  205. 1. SE Version limitations
  206. =========================
  207. QualiType Font Sentry SE has all of the features of our full
  208. version product, with one exception: it works ONLY with the
  209. Windows WRITE word processing program included with Windows.
  210.  
  211. You can thus use the SE version to experiment with and learn
  212. about what Sentry is and how it works before purchasing our
  213. full-version product. The full-version Font Sentry works the
  214. same as with Write with ALL Windows programs that are fully
  215. compatible with the Windows font sub-system.
  216.  
  217. 2. Program Installation Location
  218. ================================
  219. The Font Sentry SE program files must be located in the same
  220. directory as the FontHandler SE program files. Either program
  221. may be run independently of the other, but their files must
  222. be located in the same place in order for them to be able to
  223. co-operate (for example, for the Sentry Setup dialog to be
  224. able to be launched from the FontHandler Main Window).
  225.  
  226. 3. Multiple Master Fonts
  227. ========================
  228. QualiType Font Sentry SE (and the full version 1.0) does not
  229. support Adobe's Multiple Master Type 1 font format.  At this
  230. writing, we have plans to add MM support to the next version
  231. of Font Sentry, but for now you must manage Multiple Master
  232. or MM "instance" fonts manually, using either the Adobe Type
  233. Manager Control Panel or QualiType FontHandler.

  272. QualiType Software's "Special Edition" versions are free but
  273. copyrighted computer programs. As an end-user, you may make
  274. an unlimited number of copies to share with your friends and
  275. business associates, subject to the following restrictions:

  277. 1. "SE" Versions ONLY
  278.    These terms apply ONLY to the "Special Edition" or "SE"
  279.    version of any QualiType Software program. Unauthorized
  280.    duplication or distribution of any full-version QualiType
  281.    computer program is a violation of federal law.

  283. 2. Original, Full File-Set ONLY
  284.    If you want to give a copy of this software to someone,
  285.    you must give them the original QTSE31.EXE archive file,
  286.    containing the full file set for this product that was
  287.    prepared by QualiType Software. (This archive file is
  288.    1,392,012 bytes in size and dated 12-29-95 at 12:29PM.)

  290.    No partial-sharing of any part of this program is allowed.
